he says san francisco is twisted.

says he can see it in their eyes on their way. before they stop. bad intent. no shame. like they can buy anything. have anything.

they can't.

yet there's no end to them. and the things they ask. and expect.

joe's been panhandling.

he reads people. says that most people who give can't afford to give. many are people who were once where he is. people who've gotten out.

but those who can afford to, don't.

he's sitting on the sidewalk by a puddle.

as i sit, he apologizes for any smell. he hasn't had a shower in some time.

he split home when he was 14. hopped a freight train and joined the circus. used his brother's id. he's been on the street a year longer than he's been alive.

says he "was always a rebel." and quickly "still am."

a picture?

"you're not going to down me, are you?"

disparage him and his condition.

"no i'm not going to down you."

there are many demons at play in addiction. sometimes it is easier to help anonymously and be done with it, than over and over agian. that is so true. I confess there are people in my family and life that have reached the end of what I can do for them. but I pray someone else is out there equipped to offer something that I could not.

hes right those who can afford to give rarely do a friend of mine ended up on the streets some years back he died there, his health deteriorated over time, he wasnt someone that was easy to help. when people have an addiction its hard to tolerate some of their behaviour and deciet. his family wouldnt let him stay cos he stole from them, from me too when i let him stay ,he had children but he wasnt any use to them in his condition, he stole from them too he embarrased them with his grubby look, they were made fun of . i tried to help him so many times but he was never ready to fight the addiction and until he wanted help there was little we could do for him. it was tragic

Thank you for giving these folks a voice... They have so much light in their eyes, and everything they say is so true... How can you be anything but true when you've reached a point where there is nothing left to hold on to? So much understanding of the world, so much freedom from society's demands... Most of the people leaving comments here will never know their hidden world. "Blessed are the poor, for truly theirs is the kingdom of heaven"

The expression on this man's face really is congruent with your description of what he experiences in his life. That is the mark of a great portrait I think, you have found a way to portray and show a little of *him* in this picture.

Harpersbizarre says:
His story reminds me of the parable of the Rich Man and the Beggar in the Bible- Luke 16:
19There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
