homeless john from chicago standing next to his shopping cart; he has several bleeding sores on his face.

john has held just about every sort of "manual" job (including dealing cards). "i'm a jack of all trades" he says. he was knocked off a girder on a construction site in '89 and was badly injured. he got a small settlement and moved to the west coast (la, vegas, san diego, sf, ...).

he lives on the street with his wife, "a little black girl." when asked where she is, "she's probably panhandling over by the bart station." he's trying to get her to go to the methadone clinic with him.

he refuses the "corrupt" shelter system because there's so much theft.

moving to sf from vegas was one of the worst decisions he's made. initially he had built a great place outdoors with generators and all sorts of amenities in china basin (before the baseball park), then came the earthquake, destroying everything, and things went downhill from there.

Of the few times that I have been to SF, I have always wondered about the stories behind all these homeless people, What's the story behind "what happened" and why they are there, from another part of the country, Someone somewhere miss them.
Some of them were probably successful business men a couple decades ago, then something happened....Today, they wonder around the streets of the big cities here in the US

All your portraits are so amazing, I could spend hours in your stream... this one grabbed me especially hard. I really admire you for approaching these folks, talking to them, taking their pictures.

I spent three years + working in a homeless shelter many years ago . . . ours was one of the good ones, but so many are like this man's explanation. The homeless are us. Some were bad folk, like you find in all "walks" of life -- but, by and large, I found them to be the kindest, most generous & loving people I've ever met.

oh how sad. i love that you took the time to talk to the homeless people. i work downtown and pass alot of homeless people on the streets. people avert their eyes or give them dirty looks. its horrible. they are just as worthy of respect as you or I

Crazysax9, your comment twigged something familiar for me and it is that this portrait reminds me of a Walker Evans depression photo. To me, his face is full of anguish.

This thumbnail immediately caught my eye. His face has a very Normal Rockwell quality to it. Something about the smoothness of it all. Although Rockwell paintings are usually of much happier subjects. Really a great photo.

 GothamOddISee: Thanks friend! :))

OddZen: goes double actually hearing him speak; he's basically a waterfall of stories and experiences (truly nonstop speaking)... but he knows he's getting old and told me essentially that he's scared by the position he finds himself in as old age approaches

lakewentworth: yes! and thanks!!

MarkyBon: quite a contrast indeed

vizeer: i appreciate it!!!

What a humbling story. There's so much experience and life in John's face, but you can also feel his pain.

I just listened to a very good address to congress from George Bush and his vision of a brighter tomorrow... then I stumble across this very good image of a dark present... what a contrast.

Let's take a moment to pause and observe, and then to consider a universe capable of creating the conditions that produce such an expression. Then perhaps, let us be thankful for all we consider good and worthwhile in our personal journey, and finally let us thank The Stoneth who brought this moment to us.
