david swaying toward and against a lamppost downtown, cap in hand. smokes a cigarette. occasionally he lifts the cap and panhandles. blood is smattered and smudged about his face. glances mostly elsewhere then straight at you. says "i been thinking of my grandmother a lot lately. she's not well."

says she lives out in the woods in dominion. that's where he's from. asks, "you like old growth trees? that's what we got there." says he's thinking he should go see her.

says "gotta go now", shakes my hand, and heads off. his hand is surprisingly soft. calling after him, i ask if i can make a donation. he comes back. "yes. thanks." then, again, he's off.

as original ann comments on the youth of this man I too see the young and not so must a "lost" impression but one of deep sorrow of something/someone passed.

Again, I am so moved that anything I can think of to say would trivialize the strength of your pictures. I know I am not the first to say also that your very plain, descriptive narratives are as moving and humanistic as your photographs. I have hopped freights with homeless people, and I found the majority, though sometimes tragic, to be very genuine.

giftsketcher (a.k.a. possum4all) says:
I had to turn off 60 Minutes this weekend because they were talking in detail about a new trend in youth violence against the homeless -- their motivation?...... to video tape it so they could show it off on the internet. Made me sick to my stomach. Mostly because I kept thinking about the images that you and Craig post and the stories you have both shared with us all. What a tragedy.

original_ann says:
I want to wipe his face and point him in the right direction - - he's still reachable. Sad thing is he's probably in his early 40s... I can still see the 'youth' in this face that's just been deceptively aged by his misfortune. Wow, Stoneth... continue...
