homeless leilana sitting against trash can on sidewalk. she had just been in a fight so her eyes are swollen. sleeps in the park, which she's done since coming to sf 8 years ago. she got here by hitching from east coast; doing "whatever" to make a buck along the way.

she has a few raw sores on her face mostly hidden by her hair. i've seen her around for a while now, usually sitting huddled somewhere staring at nothing. i worried she might have some mental / emotional problems from how she acted, but talking to her, she seems fine.

but she's clearly weary and has moments where the thoughts and memories going through her head seem to chill her thoroughly.

she says she's trying to take a vacation from fucking herself up.

hi Stoneth ! You have done amazing job ! bravo !
among your "poverty my selection" I clicked this photo, just because of smile. most of other potrats are full with expressions, that can come only from very harsh and scarred life and result of our wealth, world wealth, political or social decisions and much more. and some of us start to fall deep (like people among your poverty section), no where to hold on. A vicious (one way) down spiral.

and yet they have life's beauty, simple and serene, which can be obvious for many people but needs eyes like yours (to see) and heart like your's (to listen and share) . Simply wonderful and noble job you are doing.

wish you (we) would be able to bring changes in their lives, in any ways!

Seems to me your doing more than most of us if not all of us....Because of your pics and this site, these people become real to people like myself who in normal everyday life don't give a second thought to the less fortunate...You have a gift and are blessed to know what it is, most never really know...I consider myself to be a classic hard-ass as far as feeling that people are responsible for themselves and those they choose to take responsibility for, but i'm sitting here at work almost in tears for some reason i'm not even sure of...I don't know if that means anything to anyone or if anyone else understands that but, thank you

abriwin says:
It would be so easy to say things like 'what a pretty girl' 'isn't it sad that she's on the streets' what nice teeth, what sad eyes
but
she is a sad reflection of our modern world, it's highly likely she is suffering from some mental problem which is why she is on the road.

Maybe she can't connect with people, doesn't recognise herself, doesn't know how to deal with her own problems.
You said, she's trying not to hurt herself but the question is why does she hurt herself in the first place.

She is unlucky in that she clearly has no one to care for or about her.
You took her photograph and maybe chatted with her for a while and went on your way. Through your image she has appeared in hundreds of homes but how many of us would/could help her if we were there.

Mental illness affects many people, some have a loving, understanding and supportive family, unfortunately not all of us are equipped to help and so people like this end up on the streets, unable to help themselves and unable to be helped.

You took the photo, you no doubt keep getting feedback from folks...
beautiful, I love IT! (it!? this is a human being)
pretty girl,
nice image,
great texture,
she looks so happy,
someone even described this image as perfect, jeez!

and all the other superlatives that go with taking a great photo,
but
has taking this photo and all the others like it led you back to the folks who provided you with a great opportunity to shoot the sadness on the streets.

Did this girl move you enough to want to do something about her situation? Have you been back to find her, to see if she's still there or moved on/ if you did find her, would you know how to help her, have you thought about that.

Look at how many comments you have had on this image and others like it, pages; has anyone offered help?
or, is it
just a great photograph?

I heard about about you and your work with the some of the street people from a photograher friend online. She mentioned this young girls smiling, captured image moment, and as others have mentioned, Leiana and her situation still haunt my friend. You, your camera and your subjects captured a lot of compassion to share with the rest of the world. These people and your shots are a work of Art and people need to see them. Great work and thanks for sharing your talent and their lives with us.

Wow is there any redemption in art? A Mona Lisa. If the world could pay her for this beautiful image. How fragile and mysterious is life. A blink and we each are gone. A falling leaf. I hope she can find a loving place. From her eyes and smile she deserves it as do all beings human.

I think everything about her looks illustrate a child in dire need. She's been through hell and obviously is still going through it. Working with street kids, I can easily see the suffering behind that beautiful facade. Her smile is very distant indeed.

Apropos giving some of these kids a break, there are ways and means. In the US, my friend and colleague, Rick Koca, from StandUp for Kids helps street kids all over the US.

Here in Brazil we try to do our little bit and there is a support group on Flickr below:

She smiles happiness and it's a beautiful smile, but her eyes seem to tell me a different story. All the people here are 'someone's child' but I suppose it's harder to see a younger person like this, knowing what are are destined to become if they continue on their 'chosen' (?) path. I am addicted to your pictures Stoneth.....in part due to their exceptional ability to move me, but also in the hope that there might be a picture accompanied by a message that one of these wonderful people has been given a break.

I live in hope for them all. xx
