I had the good fortune of meeting these great ladies some years ago in The City. My friends and I were sitting in a booth opposite them as we lunched at the Fog City Diner after the Pride Parade. We knew immediately who they were and their legend in SF as we had seen them on television and in photos over the years. We didn't want to interrupt their lunch but just had to seize this rare opportunity and so we introduced ourselves. They couldn't have been nicer to us. What classy TRUE "Ladies", in every sense of the word. And what wonderful ambassadors for San Francisco they are!
And what a superb portrait. You have captured their very essence.
I think they are very funny. Yesterday we were walking down the street, looking for a place to have a drink at night, and we found them. I stoped them to ask if I could make a picture and they agree.. They were talking to me and my friend that they are doing commercials nowadays , because, actually, the salary is better!!!Jajaja!!
I was walking home from Union Square tonight and saw a shocking sight -- a Brown twin walking ALONE! I jumped online as soon as I got home to see if one of them had died. Thankfully, no.
I've seen them several times. Once in white patent gogoboots with matching purses, pink, aqua and white knee length pleated plaid skirts, aqua jackets, pillbox hats. white gloves .. wonderful !
timeless and perfect. I love the way you've isolated them. They would stand out in a crowd no matter what, but in separating them from the background as you have with the strobe, you truly show how everything around them is so dull by comparison.
I have been visiting San Francisco for the past 4 years and have frequently seen them out and about on the streets of San Francisco!
I have seen them a few times at the Cheescake Factory on the roof of Macy's! (I asked a waitress this year about them and she said they come by every Thursday night without fail and request the same table!) Give them a wave as they always kindly wave back!
Quite a couple of characters! Great picture, you have captured them perfectly!
Saw them May 3 in Macy's on Union Square. Bright yellow hats, the leopard coats, absolutely charming. Had never heard about them, so was shocked - probably stared too much! They looked great. Any idea how many years young they are by now?
I was describing them to a lady on the airplane today - she told me what icons they are in the SF downtown area, and I found this site on Google.
I was just thinking about them the other day! Are they still out and about? They are such an institution in the City and Nob Hill. Great photo of the Twins
a great memory of a recent visit to SF - a table at Scala with a brass plaque saying "reserved for the Brown Sisters, Saturday 7pm". We saw them walking up the street but I could not get my camera out fast enough.
Everytime I see the twins in Union Square it brightens my mood. They are always such a surprising sight, when I spy them I always wonder if I'm dreaming.
Wow.Those two are still alive? My husband and I were eating at a small Italian restaraunt in sf about 7 years ago and they came in and ate next to us. Good to see they are still alive and kicking.
Happy to see this pic & know they are still around... I had the honor of dining at an adjacent table to them several times when I lived in SF, ten years ago now... this pic has produced homesickness in me!
this definately reminds me of diane arbus' portraiture. very cool and actually interesting, unlike the other interesting photos flickr promised to show me.
You know who else is a fantastic character? The man who does the "one man band" show at the streetcar stop down by the wharf. He has that little keyboard and often sings spirituals and hymns. Do you ever see him?
I've seen them a number of times in the city walking together. I can even remember seeing them back in the late 70s. Of course, they looked much younger then, but they have that same energy
I've seen them walking arm in arm on a foggy night.
I was on the street car
they were in the cross walk and
they waved at me!
;-)
Fabulous picture here!
To anyone who reads this: I sent stoneth a message after seeing his unbelievable San Fran life shots and requested that he keep his eye out for these twins. They eat on Saturday nights at my favorite spot in S.F. Whenever I'm in town, I always see them there, and they are undeniably some of the most captivating characters that walk this earth. Within a week- here's the shot. And it's AWESOME. Stoneth, you are the BEST!!!!!!
